Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a cancellation policy?
Yes. To reduce disruption in our clinicians’ diaries and to ensure other clients do not miss out on an opportunity to access therapy, we ask for at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Sessions cancelled with less notice will incur a cancellation fee.
How do I book an appointment?
You can book online via our client portal or contact our admin team for assistance. If you are seeking an appointment under the Workers Compensation/or Compulsory Third Party Insurance, please contact our staff directly before booking.
How does the Medicare rebate system work in Australia, and how can I apply for one?
Medicare provides rebates for psychological services, allowing you to claim up to 10 rebated sessions per calendar year. After paying the full session fee, you can claim a portion back through Medicare. We can process this for you after your first appointment, or you can claim directly using the Medicare app. To access these rebates, you will need a referral from your GP along with a Mental Health Care Plan. Referrals can also be provided by a psychiatrist or by a paediatrician for child clients.
Do you accept private health insurance?
Yes. Many private health funds provide rebates for psychology. Please check with your provider to confirm your level of cover.
Can I use both Medicare rebates and private health insurance for the same session?
No. You can only claim either a Medicare rebate or a private health insurance rebate for a single session, not both. Some clients choose to use Medicare rebates first (up to 10 per calendar year with a mental health care plan), and then switch to their private health cover once those sessions are used.
What is the difference between a registered psychologist and a clinical psychologist?
All psychologists must complete accredited university training and be registered with the Psychology Board of Australia. A registered psychologist has completed at least 6 years of education and supervised practice and can provide evidence-based assessment and therapy.
A clinical psychologist has undertaken additional postgraduate training (usually a Master’s in Clinical Psychology) with a focus on complex mental health conditions and diagnosis. Both registered and clinical psychologists can provide high-quality therapy, and both are eligible for Medicare rebates.
Is what I say kept confidential?
Yes. Everything you share with your psychologist is confidential, except in rare circumstances where there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, or if your clinical notes are subpoenaed by a court. Your psychologist or counsellor will discuss confidentiality and its exceptions more fully with you during your first session.
Do you work with children or teenagers?
Yes, we provide services for all ages. For children under 16, consent from a parent or guardian is required.
Do you provide treatment under the Workers’ Compensation or Compulsory Third Party Insurance scheme?
Yes. We are available for both. Please call (02) 46555728 for more information.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on your goals and personal circumstances. Some people benefit from just a few sessions, while others attend longer-term for ongoing support. Your psychologist or counsellor will discuss a plan with you after your first appointment.
Do I need a referral?
No, you do not. However, to access the Medicare rebate, you will require a referral from a GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician.
What can I expect during my first therapy session?
Your first session is about getting to know you. Your psychologist or counsellor will ask about your concerns, goals, and background, and work with you to create a plan that suits your needs. It is also a chance for you to ask any questions.
How long are sessions?
A standard session is typically 50 minutes, often referred to as the “psychology hour.” Recommended by the Australian Psychological Society (APS), this allows time for both the therapeutic work and for your clinician to complete important notes and preparation outside of your session. Extended sessions may be available on request.
Do you offer online or telehealth sessions?
Yes. Online video sessions or phone consults are available and can be claimed under Medicare with an eligible referral.
Can I bring a support person to my session?
Yes. You are welcome to bring a trusted person to your appointment if you feel more comfortable, though this will be discussed with your psychologist or counsellor to ensure it is helpful for your care.
